Opal Consultant Geriatrician


Geriatric Medicine Is An Exciting And Rapidly Growing Specialty In Which The Uk Is A World Leader. If You Are A Geriatrician And Want To Be Part Of A Team That Is Forward Thinking, Innovative And Ambitious, Then This Role Within Uhb’s Older People’s Assessment Liaison Team (Opal) Is Ideal For You.


Opal Is A Geriatrician Led Multi-disciplinary Team Based In All Our Emergency Departments (Ed) And Acute Medical Units (Amu) At The Queen Elizabeth Birmingham, Heartlands And Good Hope Hospitals.


The Team Comprises Dedicated Consultants, Junior Doctors, Therapists, Advanced Clinical Practitioners, Therapy Assistants, Social Workers And Nurse Practitioners With The Support Of Dieticians And Speech And Language Therapists. They Are Collocated And Work Under The Theme Of ‘Why Not Home, Why Not Today’, With Focus On Quality Care Provision And Staff Wellbeing.


We Provide Specialist Care Quickly, Helping Frail And Vulnerable People To Avoid Unnecessary Hospital Admission By Seeing Them As Soon As They Arrive And Liaising Closely With Community Services To Enable A ‘Home-first’ Approach.


The Service Is Provided Both Face To Face When Patients Arrive At Our Hospitals (Opal) And Virtually Over The Phone (Opal+) For Those Who Are Seen By Paramedics And Community Practitioners At Home.


Opal Is Now Well Integrated Within The Acute Care Pathways And Provides Training And Support To The Other Disciplines In The Field. This Includes The Community Mental Health Team To Help Mental Health Patients Avoid Unnecessary Hospital Admission Too. We Also Work Closely With The Community Palliative Care Colleagues To Reduce Hospital Admissions When It Is Appropriate And Ensure They Are Managed In The Community Without The Need To Attend The Emergency Department.


We Are Proud Of Our Achievement To Date, Having Seen More Than 30,000 Patients During 2021 With A Same Day Discharge Rate Of Around 50%.


Opal Is Part Of A Wider Birmingham Early Intervention Programme Which Aims To Prevent Unnecessary Hospital Admissions And Admission To Long Term Residential Care, Help To Recover Faster And Live Healthier And More Independent Lives, Ideally At Home.

The Posts Are To Join Our Current Established Workforce Of 30 Consultants, Spanning Four Hospital Sites. Each Post Is Primarily Based On A Single Site, However There May Be Opportunities For Cross-site Working. Cross-cover May Be Needed On Rare Occasions. Applicants Should Advise On Application Preference Of Site.


The Post Holder Will Work 10 Programmed Activities, Or Fewer If Candidate Preference, For University Hospitals Birmingham Nhs Foundation Trust, And In Addition To The Services Outlined Above Will Also Include The General Medical On-call Rota. Prospective Cover For Annual Leave Is Also Expected. The Job Plan Will Include Pas For Direct Patient Care And Spas To Support Activities Required For Revalidation Including Cpd And Educational Supervision/Teaching.


Candidates Must Possess Mrcp Or Equivalent, And Be On The Specialist Register In Geriatric And General Medicine Or Be Within 6 Months Of Cct In Geriatric And General Medicine. Applicants Must Be Entered Onto The Gmc Register.
